Among the echelons of vintage Rolex-collecting, the Paul Newman Daytona often ranks as one of the rarest and most sought-after – a holy grail for many collectors. After Hollywood actor Paul Newman – already a devotee of Rolex pieces – received a new Cosmograph Daytona, ref. 6239 from his wife to mark the beginning of his motor racing career in 1972, popularity of the model subsequently skyrocketed. Variations of the “Paul Newman” have become extremely prized as well, such as the ref. 6241, produced in only a very limited quantity of approximately less than 1000 pieces in yellow gold between 1966 and 1969, or the ref. 6238, known affectionately as the Pre-Daytona and was the last Rolex chronograph to feature a smooth bezel and graduated tachymeter scale printed directly on the dial.
