The first Royal Oak was created in 1972 and designed by the legendary watchmaker Gérald Genta, who drew inspiration for its shape from a ship's porthole and completed its blueprints overnight. It was introduced as the world's first luxury watch in stainless steel, in an attempt to revitalize traditional watchmaking from the quartz crisis.
With 50 years in production, the Royal Oak has undergone 500 variations. With this in mind, the Royal Oak case remains decorative and practical with an octagonal shape, extreme thinness, water resistance and a hexagonal crown.
This Royal Oak is a stainless steel self-winding chronograph wristwatch, size 38mm, thickness 11mm, case back secured by 8 screws, stainless steel bracelet with AP folding clasp. The Ruthénium-toned dial features the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, rhodium-toned counters and external zone, white gold applied hour markers, and hands with luminescent coating, circa 2021. With original box and paper.
The watch is in excellent, new condition. The movement is running at the time of cataloging, however, it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
