One would not forget the appearance of a Daytona, but this particular piece is definitely something not to be missed. Historically from the first Cosmograph ever created, they remained to be manually wound up until the release of the “165xx” series Daytona in 1988. In fact, it was a year of big changes for the Daytona collection as they had been equipped with, first in history, an automatic calibre that was based on the famous Zenith El Primero. Alongside the upgraded movement, the infusion of sapphire crystal, newly designed chronograph registers and enlarged case spoke a different language to its predecessors.
Nothing short of special intrinsic qualities, the most apparent would be the “porcelain” dial which is characterized by a milky, glossy surface. Looking closely, the serif fonts on the dial had a slight shadow effect as if they were magically floating in the air, creating a unique charm. Often complemented with the suspended logo, the “Cosmograph” line dropped under the other 4 lines which has a distinct appeal and separates from other versions of 16520s. Together with the inverted “6” just above the 6 o’clock mark, they confirm the identity of a rare and highly coveted Mk I dial.
Bearing all the stylistic features of an early reference 16520, the current watch is without a doubt a magnificent example in immaculate condition. This “165xx” series of neo-vintage Daytonas anchored the huge success of Cosmograph Daytona, and collectors will never forget how this legendary reference would lead to the frenzy of Daytona collecting which is still alive today.
