Getting Lost in Gaitonde with Actress Sabira Merchant

Mumbai | 15 November

In this episode of Expert Voices, join renowned actress Sabira Merchant in an exploration of Modern Indian art through V.S. Gaitonde’s masterwork Untitled, 1974. Best known for her role on What’s the good word?, the first English language show on Indian television, Mrs. Merchant developed personal relationships with many of the leading Indian artists of the 1960s and 70s including Shanti Dave, Jehangir Sabavala and Gaitonde himself. Part of an artistic reinvention that followed Independence, these artists embraced abstraction while retaining the influence of traditional Indian painting to create a bold, new aesthetic. This November, Sotheby’s will offer this never-before-seen Gaitonde painting as a highlight of our Boundless: India auction in Mumbai. (15 November | Mumbai)
