Janice Haefner (American, 1919-2002).This work is offered unframed. This life-time member of the Pacific Art League lived in Los Altos, Palo Alto and Carmel where she painted and exhibited with success for over fifty years. A substantial figural oil showing a dramatic frontal view of a young man dressed in the costume of the stock member of the Commedia dell'arte. The artist offers us a bold, forward perspective on this traditional theatrical character that successive art movements over the centuries have adapted in different ways to fill their evolving needs. The Symbolists saw Pierrot as a lonely fellow-sufferer, crucified upon the rood of soulful sensitivity, his only friend the distant moon; the Modernists converted him into a Whistlerian subject for canvases devoted to form and color and line. Over time, Pierrot has become an alter-ego of the artist, specifically of the famously alienated artist, and caustic observer, of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Pierrot's often frustrated pursuit of Columbine, coupled with his never-to-be-vanquished unworldly naïveté—have conspired to lift him out of the circumscribed world of the Commedia dell'arte and into the larger realm of myth inhabited by Everyman.

Blue Pierrot

Victor Isbrand (Danish, 1897–1989).This work is offered unframed. Precocious as a child, Victor Isbrand painted professionally from a young age and was invited to exhibit at the 1915 Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition two years before graduating from the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts. Over the course of a long career, he was the recipient of numerous prestigious national scholarships and stipends, including the Ronge (1917), the Charlottenborg Art Academy (1919–1920) and the State Art Foundation Scholarship (1978–1988). Isbrand exhibited widely and with success, including annually at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and at the Kunsthalle Charlottenborg, where he exhibited continuously for over 70 years. He was also the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, including the 1919 Charlottenborg gold medal for Aphrodite and Eros. Initially influenced by Cubism, Isbrand traveled abroad to Java and the East, exploring Primitivism and Orientalism as his style developed. He also visited and painted in Siam, Malacca, China, Japan, Paris, Greenland and Southern Europe before accepting a teaching post at the School of Applied Arts in Copenhagen, where his theories influenced an entire generation of Danish Modernists. Victor Isbrand's works are held in private and public collections, including the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark.

Aldo Riso (Italian, 1929-2008).This work is offered unframed. Aldo Riso was born in 1927 in Santa Maria di Leuca, near Lecce. He graduated with a degree in law but, from an early age, followed the path of a painter. Riso traveled and painted for many years, including to the Soviet Union, Latin America and the United States, exhibiting with success in Cologne, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Philadelphia, Belgrade, Athens, Barcelona, Madrid, Montreal, Toronto, New York, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Asuncion and South Africa. Although the artist was based in Rome, he was most at home in Specchia, where he was made an honorary citizen for his services to art. Over the course of a long career, Aldo Risa exhibited widely and with success, and his works may be found in numerous private and public collections.

Louis Weiner (Russian-American, 1892–1967).This work is offered unframed. Born in Vinnytsia, Russia, Louis Weiner moved to Chicago where he studied with Reynolds, Higgins, Poole, Norton and Krehbiel. He was a member of the Palette &amp; Chisel Club, the Chicago Academy of Fine Art, Chicago Society of Artists, Around the Palette, American Artists Congress and the Chicago Artists Union. Louis Weiner exhibited with success, including at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1927 and 1948, and is listed in Who Was Who in American Art.

Evening Landscape

Carel Dake II (Dutch-American, 1881–1946).This work is offered unframed. A substantial, early 20th-century oil showing an elegant impressionist view of the Hagia Sophia Mosque from the water with a lateen-sailed fishing boat moored and several figures at the edge of the water. A lyrical and evocative Orientalist landscape painted with sensitivity and bravura brushwork. Carel Lodewijk Dake II first studied with his father Carl Dake I, a professor at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam, where he subsequently painted for many years. He also traveled and painted throughout the East and the Orient, exhibiting widely and with success, including at the 1910 Universal Exposition in Brussels. The artist is well-listed in relevant art-biographical reference works, including in Benezit's definitive Dictionnaire des Peintures.

The Hagia Sophia Mosque

Jose Ventosa Domenech (Spanish, 1897–1982).This work is offered unframed. A substantial oil painting showing a view of the island of Majorca with ancient olive groves and mountain cliffs bathed in warm evening light beneath clouded blue skies. A large and rare study of the island by this noted Spanish landscape painter. José Ventosa Doménech was born in Barcelona and subsequently studied at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts (1911). He later took a long study trip to Brussels where he studied Vanguard painting before returning to Barcelona to study under the Realist, Martí Alsina. In 1922, Ventosa met Eliseu Meifren and Domingo Soler in Ripoll. From 1924, Ventosa exhibited with success in Barcelona. A member of the "Nou ambient," over the course of a long career, Ventosa exhibited both with the group and, with success, as a solo artist in Europe and South America, including in Mexico ("Manifestation of Catalan Art," 1937), Palma de Mallorca (Galería Costa, 1947) and the Port d'Andratx.

Todros Geller (Russian-American, 1889–1949).This work is offered unframed. An elegant and painterly Southwestern landscape painted when the artist was 48 years old. Born in Vinnytsia, now in the Ukraine, Todros Geller first studied in Odessa before moving to Canada. He continued his studies in Montreal (1906) and, subsequently, at the Art Institute of Chicago with George Bellows and John Norton. Geller exhibited widely and with success including, from 1925, at the Chicago Art Institute as well as at the Riverside Museum (New York, 1939), the New York World's Fair (1939) and at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1941), in addition to other national institutions. Geller was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, and his work may be found in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a member of professional associations including the Artist's Union, the Artist's Congress and the Chicago Society of Artists, which he also served as president. During the the 1930s, Geller was an active participant in the Federal Art Project (WPA) in Illinois and his large-scale murals and stained glass windows may be found in Chicago and Detroit as well as Tel-Aviv. We are pleased to offer this elegant Southwestern landscape painted when the artist was 45.

Carl Fischer (Danish, 1885–1955).This work is offered unframed. Carl Fischer first studied under Viggo Johansen (1907–12) and, subsequently, in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. He was the recipient of several scholarships, including the prestigious Akademie Scholarship (1917), which allowed him to further his studies abroad for two years. Over the course of a long career, Carl Fischer exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Throughout his life, he remained a regular exhibitor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art's fall invitational exhibition.

Jeune Femme Liseuse

Orla Muff (Danish, 1903–1984).This work is offered unframed. Orla Muff received his first formal art instruction at the Copenhagen Technical School from 1917–21, where he studied with the theatrical painter Carl Lund. He subsequently traveled, studied and painted throughout Europe including in France, Germany, Sweden and Holland. In the early years of his career, Muff was celebrated as a designer of sophisticated Art Deco sets and costumes for prominent theatrical productions and revues throughout Europe. These included productions for Max Reinhardt's Theater in Berlin, the Mayol Theater in Oslo and the Folk Theater in Copenhagen, among others. In the early 1930s, however, he began to focus on easel painting, creating portraits and figural works as well as abstract paintings composed in a predominantly light color scale. His figures from this period are often mythologically derived, with a high degree of Art Deco stylization and contrasted against essentially abstract backgrounds. During the course of a long career, Orla Muff exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. We are pleased to offer this figural work painted when the artist was in his late thirties.

Mogens Erik Christien Vantore (Danish, 1895–1977).This work is offered unframed. Born in Copenhagen in 1895, Mogens Vantore first studied with his father, the pioneering Impressionist Hans Christian Hansen. He continued his studies at the Charlottenborg Art Academy, to which he was admitted at the unusually young age of 14. Vantore subsequently studied in Paris (1923–25) where he came under the influence of the Post-Impressionists, particularly Derain, Gauguin and the Nabis. Returning to Denmark, he continued to exhibit successfully in Paris while commencing to exhibit annually from 1922 to 1947 at Copenhagen’s Charlottenborg Museum. In 1930, he was awarded the Akademie scholarship which enabled him to live and paint while traveling throughout Europe for two years. Winter Landscape, Red Farmhouse

Carl Conrad Stilling (Danish, 1874–1938).This work is offered unframed. An early 20th century Impressionist oil landscape, showing a view of a country lane in the old town of Hyères on the French Riviera. The late afternoon sun is reflected brilliantly from a long stucco garden wall that recedes towards a red-tiled roof, as a farmer's horse-drawn cart moves lazily away from the viewer. Carl Conrad Stilling first studied at Copenhagen's Technical School before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1893–1906), where he studied under the Realist Axel Helsted. In 1899, he also took classes in Italy at the Academia in Florence. For over 30 years, Stilling traveled widely throughout Europe painting lyrical Impressionist landscapes that he exhibited widely and with success, including regularly at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (1902–05, 1909) and the Kunstnerforen (1921, 1924, 1926, 1930) among numerous other locations. His travels and studies took him to Holland (1899, 1904, 1914); Belgium (1899); Paris (1899, 1911, 1921); Brittany (1924, 1926); Southern France (1927, 1929); Italy (1899, 1929, 1931, 1933); Switzerland (1909); Germany (1910, 1929) and Corsica (1928), the year that this work was painted. Stilling was particularly drawn to the South of France and Brittany, areas to which he frequently returned to record those qualities of atmospheric light that had attracted so many of his peers. These areas increasingly drew his attention as he continued to practice the principles of Modernism to which he had first been exposed in his early, and formative, visits to Paris. Carl Stilling was 54 years old when he painted this serene and jewel-like view of Hyères, the oldest and most southerly resort of the Côte d’Azur.

Sunny Afternoon, Hyères, Côte d’Azur

Ruth Gikow (American, 1915–1982).This work is offered framed. Born in the Russian Ukraine, Ruth Gikow's family emigrated to the United States in 1920, settling in the Lower East Side of New York. She won early recognition for her artwork at Washington Irving High School, which then had one of the strongest art departments in New York City. At 17, Gikow entered Cooper Union Art School, studying initially under Austin Purvis, Jr. and John Steuart Curry. She continued her studies under Raphael Soyer, holding a showing of her earliest paintings in the lobby of Greenwich Village's Eighth Street Playhouse. After graduating from art school, she was granted four years of WPA's Federal Arts Project funding. In 1939, under the auspices of the WPA, Gikow was commissioned to paint a series of murals, including for the children's ward at Bronx Hospital, Riker's Island and the Rockefeller Center. With a group of like-minded artists, she helped found the American Serigraph Society, which turned out high-quality, original graphics designed to be affordable to people of modest means. Following World War II and a brief career in commercial art, she met and married the expressionist artist Jack Levine. Challenged by his dedication and commitment, she returned to her own painting and drawing with renewed vigor. She illustrated Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and began to exhibit at New York's Weyhe Gallery, Grand Central Galleries, Forum Gallery and at Kennedy Galleries, where this painting was originally exhibited. Described by the art critic Henry-Russell Hitchcock as one of the country's "ten outstanding women painters," Gikow evolved her own characteristic, figurative style influenced by her studies of the Old Masters, the wall paintings of Pompeii and the Byzantine mosaics at Ravenna. Gikow exhibited widely and with success and her work is represented in numerous private and public collections, including the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Portland Museum of Art, Maine; National Institute of Arts and Letters, New York and the Butler Art Institute, Youngstown, Ohio, among others.

Chorus Line

Nura Ulreich (American, 1899–1950).This work is offered framed. This early 20th century painter, lithographer, muralist, author, poet and illustrator first studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before attending the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and New York's Art Students League. Nura Ulreich subsequently studied under John French Sloan and, later, with Frederic Gruger. She then moved to Paris where she lived for several years, exhibiting widely and with success, including at the Salon d'Automne where she met her husband, the American artist Buk Ulreich. After returning to the United States, Ulreich continued to exhibit widely, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Galleries Biennials (1928–39), the Salons of America, the Society of Independent Artists (1928, 1941) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1929–1931). Nora Ulreich's work is in numerous private and public collections, including the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, the San Diego Museum of Art and the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, among others. Starlight Blanket

Peter Rostrup Boyesen (Danish, 1882–1952).This work is offered unframed. A dramatic and psychologically penetrating figural oil of an elegantly dressed young man shown seated and holding a red book; an exceptionally fine, character-driven work by this well-listed and exhibited Danish Modernist. Boyesen first studied at the Copenhagen Art academy (1896–1901) before attending Kristian Zahrtmann's art school, where he trained under Zahrtmann for four years (1901–1904). At the Charlottenborg spring exhibition in 1906, at his first year of showing, Bøyesen entered two paintings and was awarded the museum's purchase prize. From 1907, he exhibited frequently, both at the Charlottenborg and at Den Frie Udstilling, Denmark's oldest artist association. During this period, Boyesen was awarded numerous scholarships, including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone, which he won a total of three times (1906, 1909, 1911); the Raben-Levetzau prize (1907) and, twice, the Academy Award (1912, 1924). The resulting financial support allowed him to travel frequently and freely throughout Europe, including to Paris (1912), where he was exposed to the ferment of developments in Modernist theory and, later, to Germany and Italy, where he made a study of the techniques of the Renaissance masters. Recognized as a notable theorist of Modernism, Boyesen was appointed as teacher at the Copenhagen Art Academy in 1910 and served there until 1919. In 1920, increasingly dissatisfied with the limitations of a traditional academic environment, he established his own school and many aspiring artists, including Emil Nolde, came to study and absorb the avant-garde aesthetic principles that Boyesen advanced. In 1924, he was appointed to membership of the Academy Council, which he served with distinction until 1931. In addition to easel painting, both of figurative works and landscapes, he was also a sought-after fresco painter and muralist, executing important public installations and commissions that he painted in a Post-Impressionist derivation of Social Realism. Over the course of a long career, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Peter Boyesen's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous public museums and he is listed in all relevant art reference works, including both Benezit and Thieme-Becker.

Man with a Red Book

Edouard-Jean Dambourgez (French, 1844–1931).This work is offered unframed. A fine and detailed, late 19th century view of a counter of the bustling cheese market at Les Halles, showing customers viewing, sampling and purchasing a wide array of cheeses from the busy attendants. This cabinet-sized work provides an unusual insight into the daily life of the Parisian bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century, and it is characterized both by finely observed still-life handling and fully realized and animated figures. This particular painting was the artist's sample, and it is accompanied by his original list of prices for other sizes of the same work available for commission. A large version of the work, The Cream and Cheese Market at Les Halles, was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1891 and was purchased directly from the exhibition by the City of Paris. Edouard-Jean Dambourgez first studied with Jules Lefebvre and, subsequently, as an engraver and chromo-lithographer under Gustave Boulanger. In 1880, Dambourgez commenced exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, and, in 1883, was elected a member of the Society. Throughout the 1880s, he exhibited frequently and with success at the major Paris salons, including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants and the Salon des Champs-de-Mars. In 1884, he was commissioned by the Louvre to engrave all illustrations for the catalog to the Thiers Collection, recently bequeathed to the museum. The recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, Dambourgez was awarded an honorable distinction by the Salon in 1888, and an honorable mention in 1891. In 1888, the critic Albert Wolff recommended his painting A Cheese Shop for inclusion at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1891, the city of Paris bought his large canvas The Cream and Cheese Market at Les Halles and, in 1921, his city view titled Canal in Dordrecht. According to the Revue des Beaux-Arts, the artist's style evolved from realistic to naturalist, and, by 1894, to "frankly Impressionist." Dambourgez left Paris in 1896 and subsequently lived and painted in Spain, Italy and Morocco while continuing to exhibit with success in Paris.

Cheese Market at Les Halles

Olivier Foss (French, 1920–2002).This work is offered unframed. Born in Hanover, Germany, Olivier Foss first studied art in Berlin and, subsequently, in Paris at the Lycee Pasteur and Lycee Janson de Sailly. This was followed by instruction with Paul Colin and Jean Dupas at the École des Beaux-Arts. Foss then moved to New York City, where he worked with Maria Annot and Ruth Jacoby, who organized Foss's first one-man exhibition at the Riverside Museum. A second exhibition took place at the New School for Social Research. Shortly afterwards, Foss was invited to exhibit his work at the 1964 World's Fair and the National Art Club. During this period, he also enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied drawing with George Bridgman. While painting and studying art in New York, Foss also worked as a book illustrator. He then moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was appointed Fine Arts instructor at the University of Elizabethtown and, at the same time, pursued his interest in science by studying for a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating, he taught Bacteriology in Philadelphia and worked as a Laboratory Technologist. He then moved to Switzerland and enrolled at the University of Basel where he continued his scientific studies. However, the call to pursue his art talent remained strong and, in 1949, he left the University at Basel and returned to Paris, where he settled into an atelier at Villa des Ternes. After two years painting in Paris, he assembled a one-man exhibition that toured the United States, showing in New York City, Boston, Palm Beach and Philadelphia. In 1952, he returned again to Paris and went into seclusion to pursue his "new pictorial projects, which had haunted his mind for many years." In 1953, Foss mounted a career-changing exhibition, titled "Life's Deaths and Summits," which was held at the Galerie Drouant-David on the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore in Paris. This exhibition drew promoters for international exhibitions and also led to his subsequent representation in Paris at the prestigious Gallery Charpentier. In the 1960s, Foss and the painter Armand Nakache organized a large exhibition titled "Expressionnismes" at the Musee Galliera in Paris, which he followed with successful one-man shows in Switzerland and Germany.

Albert Naur (Danish, 1889–1973).This work is offered unframed. A cheerful mid-century oil, showing a pair of leisure chairs with ruffled throw pillows beside a polished tea table carrying fresh garden flowers. Albert Naur first studied philosophy and law in Copenhagen (1908–1911) while painting in a naturalist style. Deciding to focus on his work as an artist, he moved to Paris in 1912. During his first visit, he remained there for two years and studied at the Academie de la Palette under Fauconnier and Dunoyer de Segonzac. He was initially influenced by Cubism, but soon relaxed into a linear form of Post-Impressionism. Over the course of the next decade, Naur was the recipient numerous scholarships including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone Prize (1915) and the Akadamie Scholarship, which he was awarded four times, (1916, 1920, 1922, 1924). While living and painting in Denmark, he continued to visit Paris (1919, 1922), where his palette brightened and his brushwork continued to become looser as he was exposed to the Modernist developments of the early 1920s. Over the course of a long and successful career, he exhibited widely and with success, and was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards including a silver medal in Paris (1925). Albert Naur is listed in all relevant art reference works, including Thieme-Becker and Benezit's definitive dictionary of artists.

Robert Leepin (Danish, 1884–1967).This work is offered unframed. Robert Leepin first studied under Lauritz Tuxen and Viggo Johansen at Denmark's Royal Academy of Art (1909–1914). Beginning in 1921, Leepin took study trips abroad including to Moscow (1921), France (1923–26), Italy (1924, 1930), Algiers (1927–28) and Norway (1950). Leepin's work testifies to his clear inspiration from the early years of Danish Modernism, and derived from the artist's experience of working with the first generation of the School of Paris. Over the course of a long and successful career, Robert Leepin exhibited widely, including in Paris at the Salon d'Automne (1924), at Malmo (1914) and regularly at the Charlottenborg Museum from 1930. Robert Leepin's work can be found in private and public collections, including the permanent collections of the state museums of Denmark.

A fine and detailed, cabinet-size oil painting showing an elegant Parisian cafe and bar, the interior lit by luminous, floor-to-ceiling stained-glass windows and filled with fashionably dressed patrons drinking and socializing beneath a haze of pipe and cigar smoke. A minor period masterpiece, providing an animated view of the city's fin-de-siècle nightlife, and characterized by finely observed and fully realized figures, showing an unusual degree of both social commentary and psychological penetration. According to the Revue des Beaux-Arts, the artist's style evolved from realistic to naturalist, and, by 1894, to "frankly Impressionist." Dambourgez left Paris in 1896 and subsequently lived and painted in Spain, Italy and Morocco while continuing to exhibit with success in Paris.

La Taverne Pausset, Paris

Georg Rössner (German, 1885–1972).This work is offered unframed. An elegant, early 20th century portrait of the influential German fashion designer Lieselotte Friedländer, shown seated in a chrome-steel Bauhaus chair in the style of Kem Weber, with a view beyond through a woodland grove towards blue skies. Born in 1898, Lieselotte Friedländer moved to Berlin with her family in 1909. By the mid-1920s, she had established herself as the Weimar Republic's most influential fashion designer. Her drawings of elegant, adventurous women soon overflowed Berlin’s cafe landscape to become iconic templates for feminists and the avant-garde worldwide. Friedländer's fashion vision contributed significantly to women’s increasing emancipation in the professions, social activism, sports and self-determined eroticism. This lyrical study of the fashion designer, shown in her late twenties, was painted by Georg Rössner, who studied in Berlin and Rome and, later, in Paris with Lovis Corinth. Rössner was a member of the committees of both the Berlin and Munich Sezession movements and, in 1920, was appointed professor at Berlin’s State Art School. He exhibited internationally with success including at the 1929 Paris Exhibition des Peintres-Graveurs Allemands and his work is held in prominent private and public collections, including the permanent collection of the National Gallery in Berlin. Georg Rössner’s elegant and powerful portrait of Friedländer is a poignant reminder of both her fleeting beauty and her enduring legacy. Accompanied by a first-edition copy of "Lieselotte Friedlaender (1898–1973)" by Burcu Dogramaci; published in 2001 by Ernst Wasmuth Verlag Tübingen, Berlin.

Friedrich Fehr (German, 1862–1927).This work is offered unframed. Friedrich Fehr first attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (1878–84), where he studied under Alexander Strahuber and Ludwig Von Lofftz. In 1885, Fehr was awarded the prestigious Martin von Wagner Foundation scholarship, which enabled him to live and study for five years in Italy. During this period, Fehr made an intensive study of both anatomy and the techniques of the early Renaissance masters. In 1890, Fehr returned to Germany, settling in Munich where he co-founded a private painting school. Graduates of this school included numerous well-known artists including Emil Nolde, Clara Rilke-Westhoff and Hans Meyer-Kassel. Fehr became an increasingly influential and successful teacher including, from 1897, at the Karlsruhe Academy. As a result of his grounding in anatomy, he also taught the live drawing class of the Munich Artists' Association and, in the same year, was appointed to a professorship at the Karlsruhe Academy, where he continued to lead the painting department until its dissolution in 1923. Over the course of a distinguished career, Fehr exhibited widely and with success and his works may be found in the permanent collections of national museums, including the Nationalgalerie in Munich and the Karlsruhe Museum. The artist is listed in all relevant art reference works, including Benezit and Thieme-Becker. After Friedrich Fehr's death, a bronze statue was cast in tribute to the artist and still stands above the Stephanplatz fountain in his hometown of Karlsruhe.

Jais Nielsen (Danish, 1885-1961).This work is offered framed. An early 20th century figural gouache showing Joan prior to her execution, kneeling and holding the communion chalice. She seems oblivious to the jostling crowd of captors and weeping supporters that surround her. An armored soldier stands at right, firmly grasping his scabbard and the hilt of his sword. A second solder draws aside the tent door to reveal two putti, silhouetted against an azure sky, holding the shroud with which the saint will be conveyed to her heavenly reward. Born in Denmark, Jais Nielsen initially studied at Kristian Zahrtmann’s art school and exhibited for the first time at the 1907 Autumn Salon in Copenhagen's Charlottenberg Palace. He participated in the groundbreaking “Group of Thirteen" Modernism show, where his focus on dynamic figural painting and his bold use of color set him dramatically apart from his contemporaries. From 1907–1911, his use of “primitive” Fauve colors reinforced his clear departure from traditional Danish painting and, in 1911, Nielsen moved to Paris where he settled in the Latin Quarter near the Musée Cluny. His first formal Paris exhibition was at the Salon d’Automne of 1912. During this first Paris period, from which the present work dates, Nielsen attended meetings of the Section d’Or at the studio of Jacques Villon and began to incorporate distinct, yet subtle, Cubist elements into his work. At the outbreak of WWI, Nielsen moved back to Copenhagen, taking his Parisian Modernist style with him. Sports, dance and circus life were the themes that interested him and he painted many canvases in the best tradition of the early Cubists, of which he became the earliest Danish exponent. Nielsen exhibited widely and with success and was the only Danish artist represented in the landmark Futurist exhibition, “Futurismo &amp; Futurismi” in Venice, Italy in 1986. A retrospective of his work was also held at the Galerie 1900–2000 in 1986. Jais Nielsen is recognized as a founding pioneer of Scandinavian modernism and his works are held in private and public collections worldwide, including the permanent collections of the National Art Museum in Copenhagen and the National Museum in Oslo. He is well-listed in all art historical reference works including Thieme-Becker and in Benezit, which gives a signature sample.

Carl Fischer (Danish, 1887–1952).This work is offered unframed. An early twentieth-century, Post-Impressionist style study of two figures engaged in conversation beside a barrel-organ. Carl Fischer first studied under Viggo Johansen (1907-12) and, subsequently, in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. He was the recipient of several scholarships, including the Akademie Scholarship (1917) which allowed him to further his studies for two years abroad. Fischer exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Throughout his lifetime, he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art's fall invitational exhibition at the Charlottenborg Gallery.

Organ Grinder, Paris

Victor Di Gesu (American, 1914–1988).This work is offered unframed. Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris, where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in Paris, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs among other Parisian Salons. He subsequently attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies in Rome at the Studio Hinna. Returning to California, Di Gesu worked beside several notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training combined with his scientific research into color theory allowed him to create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, revealed a verve and spontaneity that remained uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Victor Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and in France. After his return to California, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Henri Ottmann (French, 1877–1927) A softly painted view of a small village in Provence with rain clouds hanging above the hills and terracotta roofs shining through the mist. Born in 1877 in the Loire Valley, Henri Ottmann first exhibited in the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and, from 1905, at the Salon d’Automne, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. Benezit, which also gives a signature sample, calls Ottmann "a delicate expressionist colorist filled with sensitivity…”. His cityscapes of Paris, landscapes, still-lives and figural works are all composed with a subtle elegance and painted in a dramatic, yet refined, palette. Henri Ottmann’s work is held in the permanent collections of numerous national museums including the Musée du Luxembourg (Paris) and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris.
