Sotheby’s Arrives in Aspen

S otheby’s Aspen opened its doors on June 16 with the exhibition “In Focus: Warhol on Paper.” Celebrating Andy Warhol’s decades-long love affair with Aspen — which he referred to as his “toy town” — the exhibition celebrates his output on paper with some of his most iconic series and subjects, and also includes works by Damien Hirst, Rashid Johnson, Lynda Benglis and David Hockney. Each connects with nature: the butterflies on Hirst’s paintings appear as if they have just landed in wet paint, and Johnson’s collage has elements of the jungle interspersed with mirrors and tiles.

Aspen served as a place for Warhol to reconnect with nature, create meaningful memories with friends and partake in various outdoor pursuits — likewise, the staff at Sotheby’s Aspen is excited to become part of the local culture and offer a destination to meet and discuss the arts.

In Focus: Warhol on Paper

The gallery, located in the heart of Aspen Village, will feature rotating exhibitions of fine art, design, jewelry, watches, wine, spirits and collectables — all in a curated lifestyle setting. Currently in the Luxury Gallery are two pop-ups featuring Reza Jewelry and Marlo Laz. Reza Jewelry has a deep and incredible history of working with and selling the most exceptional gems in the world. The founder, Alexandre Reza, traveled the globe to acquire the most rare and beautiful stones from countries such as Columbia, India, Burma and Sri Lanka. Now run by his son, Olivier Reza, the house presents stunning original pieces of jewelry that bridge together modern classics and contemporary creations.

Marlo Laz is founded by creative director and designer Jesse Marlo Lazowski. While traveling in India, Jesse rediscovered her passion for jewelry design and worked with a team of artisans in Jaipur to create her first collection. Made in Manhattan, her pieces are inspired by world cultures and bring together craftsmanship, intricate engravings and vivid gemstones.

Also on view is a selection of furniture pieces from the Invisible Collection, an organization that has gathered together some of the best talents in interior design and craftmanship. Beautifully exhibited alongside modern and contemporary masterworks, the exceptional exhibition also serves as a wonderful convergence of design and art.

The soft opening of Sotheby’s Aspen was an incredible success that saw locals and collectors come together to enjoy the many artistic collaborations on display. The gallery’s official opening is July 2 and will include a selection of handbags exhibited in our Luxury Gallery.

Sotheby’s Aspen is located at 534 East Cooper Avenue and is open Tuesday–Sunday from 11am–7pm. Specialist appointments are available on request.
