Sotheby's Showcase: Pierre Soulages' Peinture 162 x 130 cm

Paris| 25 October 2022

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Pierre Soulages achieved international recognition, marked by several major retrospectives in European and American museums. During this period, he began to produce large-format paintings with powerful compositions, playing on the contrast between darkness and light, which are today his most sought-after canvases by international collectors.

"The content and the form are one", says Pierre Soulages. Painting 162 x 130 cm, 2 May 1963 is the most perfect pictorial embodiment of this symbolic statement by the master of black.

At the heart of the darkest areas of the painting, reflections of light emerge from the material, accentuated in their brilliance by the spaces left free.

This painting, with its strength and breath, is undoubtedly one of the best demonstrations of Soulages' genius. Beyond the dynamics that jump out at the viewer, a subtle harmony emerges from its composition.

This piece will be part of the Modernités Auction in Paris October 25.
