The Cross-Currents in America sale includes European and European subject matter paintings, sculpture, and French 20th century design alongside Chinese and Chinese export ceramics. The Wolf Family Collection of Chinese ceramics is one of the most important collections of its type assembled by a collector in North America, and includes a fine group of famille-verte large vases and chargers, some with J.P. Morgan and Rockefeller provenances, and a comprehensive collection of Chinese Export armorial and European subject wares.
Among the varied highlights of this sale are a Chinese export punch bowl decorated with a view of the ‘Hongs’ at Canton, a Charles Rennie Mackintosh Flower Study, and Hiram Power’s marble bust Greek Slave. Presented together these works speak to a global exchange of ideas and craftsmanship, and a diversity of interest on the part of the collectors in works outside of traditional American paintings and decorative arts.
